It is not even possible to give a rundown of Nigerian highlife without giving loads of honor to Nigerian musician, writer, sculptor and foremost musical instrument inventor, Sir Victor Uwaifo.
His career started as far back as 1965 with his Akwete rhythm and he made history in Nigeria when he won the first Philips’ Golden record in Nigeria, West Africa and Africa in 1996 for Joromi –he has a total of 12 golden records to date.
In 1983, Uwaifo’s contributions to Nigeria earned him the esteemed National Honors Merit, Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), the first professional musician in Nigeria to be awarded such.
Here is the first volume of his greatest hits compilation, put out by Polydor Records in 1980 and subsequently by Makossa International Records in 1981.
