It was originally released on September 24, 1982 and was later re-released in 1983, 1985 and 1998.

The single originally peaked at Number 44 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1982 but with its 1983 re-release, it peaked at Number 12 on the Hot 100, Number 2 in Australia and at Number 25 in the UK.

However, with its 1985 re-release, it reached an impressive Number 2 in the UK.

Following Prince‘s death, the song re-charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at Number 27.

Furthermore, the single has sold more than 800,000 units in the US alone.

This song is one of Prince‘s best-known, and has been ranked by Rolling Stone at number 215 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
